How Google’s New Gemini Gems AI Experts Can Boost SEO

Google announced a new feature for Gemini AI called Gems that are pre-defined specialized experts to help users code, coach, create content, brainstorm and handle other tasks. Gems will soon roll out with premade experts and the ability for user to create their own experts to handle specific tasks.

What Is Gemini Gems?

Gemini Gems is a feature of Google’s Gemini AI platform that are created for specific narrowly defined tasks. Users can create their custom AI experts by providing specific instructions that will make the Gems an expert that can offer help in a highly defined role.

Google offered this explanation of what Gems is about:

“Over the coming days, Gemini Advanced, Business and Enterprise subscribers can start creating and chatting with Gems, the custom versions of Gemini first previewed at I/O. You can customize Gems to act as an expert on topics or refine them toward your specific goals. Simply write instructions for your Gem, give it a name, and then chat with it whenever you want.”

How To Use Gems For SEO

I haven’t seen Gems yet but I wonder what would happen if you feed it Google’s quality raters guidelines, their SEO starter guide, and other documentation then set it loose on content to see if it could identify where it could be improved and why.

Screaming Frog Gem

It may be possible to create a Gem that can take Screaming Frog website crawl data dump and identify specifics issues and create an organized report. For example, it can identify chained internal redirects, identify internal redirects caused by linking to the wrong page, internal 404s always need to be fixed and this can quickly dump the source of the 404 into an orderly report. A Screaming Frog Gem can take a data dump of URLs with duplicate titles and with a few rules make a determination if the title needs to change, content needs to be noindexed or merged or simply updated.

A Gem For Content SEO

There are a lot of ways content can go wrong. Create a Gem that identifies the topic of the entire page then analyzes the titles to see if they’re sufficiently general, if the first heading sufficiently specific and if the subsequent paragraphs are grouped into meaningful chunks that are marked off by relevant headings that reflect the subtopic. You can even create a rule to suggest reorganizing paragraphs so that ones that are out of context can be moved to the section of the article that has that context.

Content Evaluation For Images

Humans primarily consume content with their eyes and their ears. A web page offers something to read but it’s not  the same as receiving content in the form of images, which human eyes and brains are literally connected to do. Reinforcing content with images has been scientifically proven to be help all readers to comprehend text. Images are also content that reflect on what the topic of the page is about, another reason to add the right images to an article. Images are important for SEO and a Gem can help publishers and SEOs analyze content to understand important images that should be added to the content.

A Gem can be trained to review content and suggest images that are helpful. If a percentage is referenced in the text then it can suggest a visualization that will help readers visualize that percentage and get a double-impact of that data so that it is understood. If the message of the content is that the product will make the consumer’s life better it can suggest an image that shows them deriving satisfaction from the product or service.

Google’s Use Cases

Google offered examples of how Gems can be used in business and professional settings. While none of the examples are directly related to SEO they do give an idea of ways it can be uses.
